A short history
Mercedes-Benz traces its roots to Karl Benz's 1886 Patent-Motorwagen and Gottlieb Daimler's early engines. The Mercedes name arrived in 1901; the three-pointed star became one of the world's most recognised marks of engineering.
From Silver Arrow race cars to S-Class comfort and AMG performance, Mercedes shaped what luxury motoring means in Europe. In London it remains the default choice for boardrooms, airport runs and black-tie evenings.
How to drive one well
- Give yourself ten calm minutes after handover. Learn camera angles, parking sensors and ride height before tight Mayfair streets.
- Use Comfort or Eco modes in town; save Sport for clear dual carriageways. Sudden throttle in wet weather bites harder on rear-biased models.
- Watch overall length on the G-Class and long-wheelbase saloons. Plan fuel and ULEZ/congestion charges before you set off.
